Adjective-Noun Combinations in German
In German, adjectives used with nouns take special endings. These endings depend on the gender, case, and the article in front of the noun. If you're saying “the old man”, you say der alte Mann. If you're talking about “the new book”, it's das neue Buch.
When combining adjectives and nouns, put the adjective directly before the noun and match the ending with the definite article:
- der alte Mann (masculine)
- das neue Buch (neuter)
- die große Stadt (feminine)
The adjective endings change when the noun changes gender or case. Some examples:
- masculine:
- der billige Fernseher
- der große Zaun
- der schwarze Vogel
- der freundliche Hund
- der weiße Stuhl
- feminine:
- die billige Pizza
- die bunte Blume
- die freundliche Nachbarin
- die große Uhr
- die weiße Blume
- neuter:
- das alte Zimmer
- das bunte Bild
- das billige Auto
- das neue Spielzeug
This pattern is used with different adjectives and nouns:
- Size:
- die große Stadt
- der große Zaun
- die große Uhr
- Color:
- die schwarze Katze
- der schwarze Vogel
- das bunte Kleid
- der weiße Tisch
- Quality or opinion:
- das schöne Wetter
- das schlechte Wetter
- der freundliche Lehrer
- die billige Pizza
Using these adjective-noun combinations helps to describe people, objects, and situations more clearly:
- Der alte Mann liest das neue Buch.
- Das bunte Bild hängt im alten Zimmer.
- Die freundliche Nachbarin bringt die weiße Blume.
With weather, use adjectives as well:
- Das schöne Wetter lädt zum Spazieren ein.
- Das schlechte Wetter bleibt noch ein paar Tage.
Adjective-noun combinations are common in everyday German and make your descriptions more precise.
