Asking for and Giving Directions
When you're in an Italian city and need to ask how to get somewhere, start your question with Dove. For example, Dove si trova il museo? means “Where is the museum?” To answer, you can use verbs like andare (to go), prendere (to take), and directions such as destra (right) and sinistra (left).
To give step-by-step instructions:
- Vada dritto (go straight)
- Poi giri a sinistra (then turn left)
- Prenda la seconda strada a destra (take the second street on the right)
- Il museo è accanto al cinema (the museum is next to the cinema)
- La fermata del treno è dietro alla scuola (the train stop is behind the school)
- Il supermercato è vicino alla piazza (the supermarket is near the square)
- Il negozio è lontano dal centro (the store is far from the center)
To clarify or repeat directions, Allora is used like “so” or “then,” and ricordare can be used to remind: Ricordi, il parco è lungo il viale.
You may also hear:
- Noi troviamo la biblioteca sulla destra (we find the library on the right)
- Procedere oltre il ristorante (go past the restaurant)
- La piscina si trova sotto il comune (the pool is below the town hall)
