Using the Verbs "comprar", "pagar", and "gastar"

When shopping in Brazil, you’ll frequently use the verbs comprar, pagar, and gastar to describe your transactions.

Comprar

To discuss the act of buying goods:

For example, Eu compro uma camiseta no shopping describes buying a t-shirt at the shopping center.

Pagar

This verb is used when discussing payment:

For example, Eu pago no caixa means you are paying at the checkout.

Gastar

Used when you want to talk about spending money:

For example, Eu gasto muito com eletrônicos suggests spending a lot on electronics.

Describing the Experience of Shopping

Shopping can occur in lojas or larger shopping centers known as shopping. You might find yourself browsing through açoms (aisles) as you explore products.

Example Sentences:

• A compra foi rápida e fácil. (The purchase was quick and easy.)
• O shopping está cheio hoje. (The shopping mall is busy today.)
