Gardening Activities
When talking about gardening, common actions include arroser for watering plants and planter when adding new species to the garden. To grow your own fruits and vegetables, use cultiver or organize a potager, which is a vegetable garden. Working organically, bio methods involve using natural products and avoiding chemical pesticide or herbicide. For plant food, say engrais for fertilizer, and fertiliser to mean to fertilize. Instead of throwing away scraps, you might start a compost to make nutrient-rich soil for your garden. For gardens with fruit trees (le cerisier, le pommier), the verb is récolter when it's time to harvest. Using sturdy outil, you can tailler (prune) a buisson or manage your pelouse (lawn). For delicate or tropical plants, a serre (greenhouse) is helpful.
Examples:
- J’arrose les fleurs chaque matin.
- Il faut fertiliser le potager au printemps.
- J’ai planté un arbre près de la serre.
- On fait du compost pour enrichir la terre.
- Nous récoltons les légumes du jardin en été.
Describing Plants
The garden can be filled with many types of plants and trees. Some are ornamental, like le bonsaï, l’orchidée, or la rose, while others are useful for food: le poirier (pear tree), le pommier (apple tree), le pêcher (peach tree), le framboisier (raspberry bush). Mediterranean gardens often have l’olivier (olive tree) or le laurier (laurel). There are also robust plants like le cactus or la succulente, and flowering plants such as le jasmin or la violette. Palms like le palmier are typical in warmer regions.
Examples:
- Le citronnier produit beaucoup de fruits.
- J’ai acheté une succulente pour la cuisine.
- La serre contient plusieurs orchidées.
- Le rosier est en fleurs au printemps.
Describing Parts of Plants
When identifying or caring for plants, you often talk about their different parts. La fleur and la feuille are the flower and leaf. Le fruit grows after successful pollination, and inside you might find la graine. The support comes from la tige (stem), and underground, la racine anchors the plant and absorbs water.
Examples:
- Les racines ont besoin d’eau pour se développer.
- La tige soutient la fleur.
- Il y a plusieurs graines dans ce fruit.
Garden Maintenance
Keeping a garden healthy requires regular maintenance. Watering is l’arrosage, and sometimes you need l’irrigation for larger spaces. For nutrients, l’engrais or compost from le compostage is common. Gardeners combat weeds during le désherbage, and to protect against too much sun or dryness, use le paillis. Pruning is called la taille. Talk about tools (outil), the need for l’ombre (shade) or le soleil, and working with la terre (soil). Many gardeners use le pot for indoor or patio plants. The term l’entretien covers all ongoing care, and le jardinier is the gardener.
Examples:
- Le désherbage est nécessaire toutes les semaines.
- J’utilise du paillis pour protéger la terre.
- L’arrosage doit être fait tôt le matin.
- On met les plantes fragiles à l’ombre.
In France, community gardens (jardins partagés) are popular in cities, bringing people together to grow food and share gardening tips.
