Talking About the Weather

To describe the weather in Spanish, use various phrases with either the verb estar (to indicate current weather conditions) or hacer (for general weather situations).

Use phrases with está to talk about ongoing weather:

• Está lloviendo (it is raining)
• Está nevando (it is snowing)
• Está nublado (it is cloudy)
• Está soleado (it is sunny)

Use phrases with hace to talk about how it feels:

• Hace calor (it is hot)
• Hace frío (it is cold)
• Hace sol (it is sunny)
• Hace viento (it is windy)

For specific weather elements:

• El arcoíris appears after rain with sun.
• La tormenta, la tormenta de nieve, and la tormenta eléctrica are for storms.
• To mention temperature, use la temperatura.
• La humedad (humidity), la nube (cloud), el sol (sun), and el viento (wind) are commonly used in context, for example:
  • Hay mucha humedad hoy.
  • El viento está fuerte esta mañana.
  • Las nubes cubren el cielo.

Examples:

• Hace mucho calor en verano.
• Está nublado, pero no llueve.
• Hay una tormenta eléctrica.
• Vi un arcoíris después de la lluvia.

Using Weather Forecasts

When discussing weather forecasts, phrases often include predictions and measurements.

• El pronóstico del tiempo or la previsión del tiempo both mean the weather forecast.
• La temperatura máxima and la temperatura mínima are used for the forecasted high and low.
• Probabilidad de lluvia is the chance it will rain, usually given as a percentage.
• To talk about what the weather feels like: la sensación térmica.
• El índice de calor refers to the heat index.

Examples of phrases you might see or use:

• Según el pronóstico del tiempo, mañana habrá lluvia.
• La probabilidad de lluvia es del 60%.
• La temperatura máxima será de 28 grados.
• La sensación térmica es de 35 grados por la humedad.
• Hoy, el viento estará fuerte por la tarde.

In weather reports in Mexico, it’s common to mention both la humedad and el viento, since they affect how the temperature feels.
During rainy seasons, especially in central and southern areas, la lluvia and las tormentas eléctricas are important in the forecast.
Mexican news typically uses both Celsius for temperature and percentages for probabilidad de lluvia.
