Talking about Weather Conditions

Weather conditions are an important part of daily conversation. When describing the weather, it’s common to focus on how it looks and feels. Use adjectives to describe what you see outside.

It is sunny today.
The weather is cloudy and cool.
It’s hot and humid in the summer.
It is rainy this afternoon.
It is snowing right now.
It’s very windy by the coast.

To describe the temperature, mention degrees and a scale:

The temperature is 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
It's 25 degrees Celsius outside.

For strong weather:

There is a thunderstorm tonight.
It is hailing during the storm.
It is stormy and dark.

Talking about the Forecast

The weather forecast is helpful for making plans. Use expressions like these:

The forecast says it will rain tomorrow.
We expect snow this weekend.
They predict a thunderstorm in the evening.
It is going to pour later.
I feel like it might snow soon.

If you talk about temperatures changing or movement in the weather, use these verbs:

The temperature will increase tomorrow.
It will decrease at night.
The sky is going to clear up.
It will cool down in the evening.
If it gets colder, the roads could freeze.

Describing the Seasons

Each season has its own typical weather:

Spring is often rainy and windy.
Summer is hot, sunny, and sometimes humid.
Autumn is cool and it can be cloudy.
Winter is cold and snowy in many places.

You can also mention how the weather might change over a season:

It becomes warmer in the spring.
In autumn, the temperature decreases and the days get cooler.

There are special verbs for describing the weather changing or staying the same:

It is going to warm up tomorrow.
The weather will improve by afternoon.
It might worsen in the evening.
The rain will stay for the whole day.
