Introductions
When meeting someone for the first time, it's common to introduce yourself by saying who you are. A straightforward way to do this in Portuguese is using:
- Quem é? (Who is it?)
- Eu sou... (I am...)
For example, if you want to introduce yourself:
- Quem é? → Eu sou o João.
- Quem é? → Eu sou a Maria.
Asking and Sharing Names
To ask someone’s name, you use a simple and polite question:
- Como te chamas? (What is your name?)
When responding, you can use:
- Eu sou... or simply Sou..., followed by your name.
For example:
- Como te chamas? → Eu sou o João.
- Como te chamas? → Sou a Ana.
Discussing Places of Residence
To ask someone where they live, you use:
- Onde vives? (Where do you live?)
To answer, you use:
- Eu vivo em... (I live in...)
For instance:
- Onde vives? → Eu vivo em Lisboa.
- Onde vives? → Eu vivo no Porto.
Talking About Professions
Engaging in conversations about one's job is also important. To inquire about someone's profession, you ask:
- O que fazes? (What do you do?)
When responding, you use:
- Eu sou... followed by your profession.
Examples:
- O que fazes? → Eu sou engenheiro. (I am an engineer.)
- O que fazes? → Eu sou professora. (I am a teacher.)
These expressions will help you engage in basic conversations when meeting new people in a Portuguese-speaking context.
